I love Mock & Toof! They’ve got some great remixes out there, and they produce some pretty spiffy music as well. Here’s a writeup from Resident Advisor about them and their upcoming new album:
Mock & Toof have revealed details of their forthcoming full-length, which goes by the name of Tuning Echoes.
Comprised of Duncan Stump (Mock) and Nick Woolfson (Toof), the English production outfit have steadily built up a reputation for quirky and melodic disco-fueled house productions, being picked up by both DFA and Mule Musiq for 12-inch singles. However, Stump has been managing his own Tiny Sticks imprint since 2005, releasing tracks and remixes from the likes of Michoacan, Shit Robot, Escort and Telespazio, and it’s through his own label that Tuning Echoes will be issued.
While fans may associate them with the electronic disco scene that has become popular during the last decade, Stump is eager to distance themselves from being pigeonholed into the genre. “We’ve never been about ‘nu-disco’, whatever that means anyway,” he explains. “Anyone who knows our music will know that we’re a bit all over the place as producers. If we like an idea we run with it, and we’re much more comfortable being eclectic and not pigeonholed. Hopefully the album will help us in our quest for non-categorisation!”
The album may certainly be a shock to those expecting a full-length of instrumental club tracks, as Tuning Echoes is a largely vocal affair, with previous collaborator Gavin Gordon and Munich-based singer-songwriter Pollyester providing the record’s respective male and female voices. The murky, low-slung disco-pop of DFA single “Underwater” is the only previously released track, with the rest of the record encompassing bleepy boogie (“Day Ken Died,” “Shoeshine Boogie”), twinkling electro-pop (“From Kashima”), vocoder-aided disco-punk (“The Key”) and even some slo-mo beatless arpeggiation (“P2160″).

Well, that’s all she wrote… Unfortunately the Vancouver Canucks playoff hopes fizzled out in game 6 against the Chicago Blackhawks tonight. It was an almost eerie reminder of the last playoff series against them, where we suffered an identical game 6 loss, occurring on the exact same day 1 year ago. Perfectly shitty. So for now, I suppose we can hope to see the Montreal Canadians win tomorrow in game 7 against last year’s champs the Pittsburgh Penguins. At least that will leave us Vancouverites some sort of excitement to look forward to, basically turning it into a Canada VS US thing… Jaroslav Halak has been playing fantastic in the net, so maybe they have a chance of going all the way. “Go HABS!” Whatever…
Last night after finishing up my gig in North Van, I decided to meet up with my bro Nathan, and he tells me he’s at some huge party under a bridge in east Van put on by Hyaenas. Holy frackles it was hands down the dopest thing I’ve been to in Vancouver since I moved here. There was great music for the short while (not sure who was on) I was there, which was dub/ragga based. The lineup consisted of Basketball, Max Ulis, No Gold, Phowa, The Brown Acid and Hyaenas crew. The sound wasn’t exactly huge but what blew my mind the most was the fact that there were like 500-800 people there between the grungy metal bridge girders and rubble and discarded furniture. It was so ghetto, and SO beautiful. I could only imagine a detroit techno party going off there. It was rad as shit. I knew it couldn’t last and sure enough, the cops came to herd everyone out of there. I don’t know what else happened next exactly cause I took off before any cop backup arrived, but man it was great until about 3:20am or so… Here are a couple dodgy shots of the crowd and one of Nathan & Sam…
AGFA, or at least one half of AGFA, Frank Cueto, played some pretty sweet funk/disco/house tunes down at Shine last night. He was supported by DJ Neighbour, DJ Evo & Three piece suite and MC Think Tank on the mic. Here are a few pics from the night…
One of my favorite funk groups, All Good Funk Alliance (Funk Weapons, Washington DC), are playing tonight at Shine Nightclub alongside local Disco/Boogie funkster, Neighbour (Funk Weapons, Good Groove), DJ Evo & Three Piece Suit, with MC Think Tank on the microphone! Should be dope!
Channel One Media & Funk Weapons International are proud to present “THE FUNK WEAPONS SUPER JAM” a night of the worlds best funk, disco and boogie at one of Vancouvers’ premier nightclubs. Continue reading 'All Good Funk Alliance @ Shine Nightclub Tonight!'»
The first offerings in the “Last Night On Earth” series are two excerpts from my bi-weekly night @ The Whip Gallery Restaurant on 6th Ave (@ Main) in Vancouver. It’s a fun place to play where there is quite a bit of freedom for musical direction.
Set A starts with some classic downtempo beats and moves into some slow deep disco.

This one is for those times when you need to take it easy, regroup, revive, settle down, come down, come up, escape, return or any combination of these actions. Relaxed and non abrasive balearic grooves will soothe you, reassure you, soften your edges, bring you back to earth, or maybe even send you off into space! I enjoyed making this mix on the fly, selecting tracks as the mix progressed that I’ve been really wanting to lay down in a chill mix. I hope you enjoy experiencing this mix as much as I enjoyed mixing it, and that it will enhance your emotions at times when you really need it… Much love.
