Cymande – Brothers On The Slide
I’ve been fortunate to be invited to be part of a group of drummers that will be performing at all the Vancouver Whitecaps home games. We will hype the crowd before the game, and play on the pitch as the players run out onto the field. Everyone is getting very excited about it, as the season starts in 2 weeks with a friendly match this Saturday. This season is going to be a lot of fun!

Man I love brazilian music. Jorge Ben Jor was the composer behind Mas Que Nada, a classic Brazilian song made famous by Sérgio Mendes and then bastardized by none other than the Super Bowl sellouts The Black Eyed Peas. That version actually featured Jorge Ben Jor, but man is it terrible. Enough about that… One of my favorite funky tracks from Fila Brazillia’s Old Codes, New Chaos album had this part that I couldn’t quite figure out the lyrics to for years. Turned out it was from this fantastic track by the man Jorge himself:
And just for good measure, a fresh listen of Mas Que Nada is always a good thing:
I came across this awesome track today. Totally has those detroit techno synth sounds, and has been rocked in sets by producer/djs such as Theo Parrish. Jean Luc Ponty is a French born vituoso violinist and jazz composer who has worked with Zappa, Elton John and many others… Ponty was among the first to combine the violin with MIDI, distortion boxes, phase shifters, and wah-wah pedals. This resulted in his signature, almost synthesizer-like sound.
Check out this cut… Rad.
Gwen Guthrie was a fantastic r&b/soul singer who also sang backing vocals for great artists such as Aretha Franklin, Billy Joel, Stevie Wonder, and Madonna. Sadly, she passed on in 1999 due to uterine cancer. She recorded some utterly amazing music during her visit to this planet, and several of her cuts got the remix treatment from none other than Larry Levan, of Paradise Garage fame. This track is so badass, and even moreso is the instrumental version, which I couldn’t find on youtube to showcase. Both versions were remixed by Levan. Essential!

I love this Blackbyrds track! It’s got that great summer groove perfect for these hot summer days.
The Blackbyrds were an American rhythm and blues and jazz-funk fusion group, formed in Washington, D.C. in 1973, and were led by trumpeter Donald Byrd. Their jazz-funk classic, “Rock Creek park” is probably their most widely know track, from the “City Life” album. It has been sampled numerous times by groups such as De La Soul, Eric B. & Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, NWA, Massive Attack, Ice Cube, Heavy D, Nas and Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five.
This is a dope Mock & Toof tune and there’s a sick ass remix by Kink & Neville Watson. Yes.
Brandon Biebel, Zered Bassett, Ryan Decenzo, Ron Deily, and Magnus Hanson barge in on a Vancouver shipyard and skate everything from metal ropes to floating gaps.
